Bury St. Edmunds has a rich web of history woven into every street. Just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the town centre can be found the award-winning Abbey Gardens and the remains of the great Benedictine Abbey. Wandering through the ruins, visitors will arrive at St. Edmundsbury Cathedral - which was completed in 2005 with a 140 foot gothic-style tower.
Visit the Greene King Brewery and Visitor Centre to learn about the history of some of the country’s best-loved beers. Take a stroll into the town centre and visit Moyses Hall Museum, based in one of England’s few surviving Norman Houses. Exhibits include relics from the infamous Murder in the Red Barn, mummified cats and stone coffins. The day can be completed by visiting the Art Gallery, St. Mary’s Church, or by taking a Blue Badge guided tour or in the evening see a play at the newly restored Georgian Theatre Royal.
Return to the town centre to experience the different assortment of shops; large high street names, many contained in the new Arc shopping centre opened in 2009, family-run businesses and fascinating gift shops. All offering quality, choice, value and convenience. With a choice of tea shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs when you need to sit down and take a break.
Wednesdays and Saturdays it the time to visit the market situated in the Buttermarket and Cornhill to buy fruit and vegetables, clothes, hardware, fabric, pet foods, flowers, seafood, shoes and other speciality goods.
