Ipswich is one of England’s oldest towns, thought to be the first of the "new towns" settled by the Angles at the end of the Roman occupation. One of the town’s jewels, and a must for visitors, is Christchurch Mansion. This beautiful Tudor house, set in the magnificent Christchurch Gardens, dates from 1548 and houses a superb art collection, including the best collection of works by Constable and Gainsborough held outside London.
Shopping is a real pleasure with a great variety of shops, which include some of the big names, while many long-established local businesses and specialist shops can be found in the quaint, historical 'back streets'. The shopping experience is complete by visiting the thriving outdoor market which visits the Cornhill on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, as well as Farmers and Continental Markets which fill the town centre on occasional Sundays. A large variety of restaurants, cafés and bars are available for the weary shopper to relax and revive themselves during a busy day of shopping.
